Moving to the Big City?

January 9, 2018

Life in a small town isn’t for everyone, but certainly has its privileges. Moving to the big city can be exciting it can also be a major culture change; going from a slower pace of living to one that’s a bit tumultuous, and can even be stressful. While there is so much more to do right out your front door, it can come with its share of disadvantages (noise, poor water quality, etc.). Being proactive prior to your move and doing a bit of research can help you figure out if you are ready for the move.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Coming from a small town or suburb you’ll also want to make sure that you have an awareness to help you to better break down where you should live. Today, there are tons of resources like local blogs, websites, tourism boards, social media and more where you can better understand what life is like in your potential city.

HAVE YOU PREPARED

Life in the city is fast-paced and exciting, but does that mean that this lifestyle is right for you? As you’re doing your research you also want to have a serious heart-to-heart with yourself and your family and friends to help you to better make your decision. During this stage, you should be asking yourself: Are you really ready to live in the city? Can you handle the noise? Are you ready to commute on the subway? Are you ok to be financially unstable in the beginning? Are you ok with living far from home? What kind of budget can you work with? As you go through these questions, you’ll have a better understanding if the move is right for you.

GET ORGANIZED

You can opt for a moving company to move all of your stuff or a DIY move. If you still live at home with your parents, it’s best to leave or donate some of your stuff as you won’t need all that much in your city apartment. If you currently live in a house or apartment, you’ll likely have to downsize so that your stuff fits into your new home. Another option is to place your items in storage, which depending on what you have and your budget, could be a good option for you to hold onto some items without having to relocate with them.
