Internet Speeds: Streaming or Gaming

November 5, 2018

While high speed internet is available in most markets, if you are a "Netflix binger", have kids that play Minecraft or Fortnite or even someone who works from home -SPEED MATTERS. But how much is TOO much? What internet speed suits your needs?

SPEED CHECK

Home internet speeds can vary based on what you are using the internet for. The FCC recommends internet speeds of 12-25 Mbps. Keep in mind this is for families with multiple internet users that frequently stream online.

One way to gauge good download and upload speeds is to take it from the Federal Communications Commission, and their definition of broadband: "internet with download speeds of at least 25 Mbps and upload speeds of at least 3 Mbps (since 2015)".

Download speeds of at least 25 Mbps accommodate most families, but the best download speeds and upload speeds for you depend on how you use internet at home.

You can measure your current internet speed by taking an online speed test on a computer that’s connected to your home Wi-Fi. Many internet speed tests also tell you your ping time and differentiate your connection’s upload and download speeds.

WHAT SPEEDS WORK FOR STREAMING (Netflix & Hulu)

The minimum recommendation would be 25 Mbps, if you prefer to watch video on 4K, or HD. That being said, speed requirements vary by streaming service and what video quality you want to watch. To stream most videos in standard definition, you’ll need at least 3 Mbps.

WHAT SPEEDS WORK BEST FOR GAMING?

You only need speeds of 1-3 Mbps to game online, but for a consistently good gaming experience, 10-25 Mbps tend to be best. Certain factors, like your local area connection and internet latency can affect your ping time more than internet speeds. The best internet for online gaming is typically cable internet or fiber-optic internet since they both provide low-latency internet connections.
