It’s a good idea to construct a moving checklist. There are so many things you need to take care of when you move, it can be easy to overlook something – or flat out forget about it. Here are a few punch-list items we recommend adding to your checklist.
Check Online Reviews of your Moving Company
This seems like a no brainer, but many people do a quick Google search and do very little research into customer experiences with the company you are trusting to come into your home. Be sure they are licensed, and we always recommend checking with Better Business Bureau. They
Measure Before You Move
Taking measurements of your new home allows you to forecast delivery of your appliances and furniture before you lift a thing. Many of us have seen the PIVOT episode of Friends, but the reason it’s so funny is because it’s so true. Standing at the top of your stairs, trying to figure out how that massive armoire is ever going to make it around the corner. A simple tape measure could save you some back breaking work. If it’s not going to fit in your new home, this leads to our next recommendation…
Throw the ultimate Yard Sale
After you have your handy measurements, you know what furniture will be coming with you, and what you are able to get rid of. Sure, you can keep things in your garage and try to sell it on Craigslist, but a yard sale brings people to you. It can also help clear out a lot of items in a very short amount of time. You can also donate your furniture to local charities like the Salvation Army.
Healthcare Providers in your new Neighborhood
If you are moving out of state or just out of range of your current doctor’s office, you may need to search for a new primary care or endocrinologist. The best person to ask is actually your current provider. They are typically part of medical networks that have providers all over, that hold their practitioners to the same standards you are used to with your current provider.
Home Service and Utility Relocation
You will need to call the utility companies you currently have, get your account numbers, request new address forms, ask them to have everything turn off on your move out date, and assure they will be active when you move in. This includes water, energy and gas.
Now for home services like cable or satellite TV, internet and security. You can call them all directly and request your move… but what if there is a better deal out there? It’s usually a good time to shop for the best deals and lowest rates on these services, but that also takes time.
