Demystifying Deregulated Energy?

October 9, 2019

If you are moving and looking to connect your utilities, it always helps to have an expert on your side. ONIT Concierge can help relocate your home services like TV, internet and security, but we also help connect your utilities like water, gas and energy. If you are crossing state lines, or even just moving into a new county in your state, you may be eligible for deregulated energy options, but what is deregulated energy?

There are two potential markets when it comes to energy consumption and access, REGULATED and DEREGULATED

In a regulated electricity market there is typically a single company (referred to as a UTILITY) which owns all of the available infrastructure. They have systems and hardware that stores and distributes electricity like the poles, transformers and wiring. These utility companies are responsible for purchasing electricity from ‘generators’ and then selling to you directly.

This means that any time there is a broken transformer or need of any other service, you can always call that utility company, as they are responsible for their equipment and any pending issues in service.

But what if you feel like their rates are high? Are you able to shop around for another provider?

Unfortunately, NO. This is where deregulation comes into play.

A deregulated electricity market allows multiple providers to purchase and resell energy from different sources, all while using the equipment and infrastructure constructed and maintained by a utility provider. This allows these providers to fight for your business, and cut into their profit margins to win your business.

But what about service and maintenance? If you do have an outage in these markets, you can still call the utility company, as they are still responsible for keeping the network online. The best part of deregulation is being able to shop around for the best deals and lowest rates.

In short - deregulation gives you the POWER to choose the company that can provide your home the lowest per kw rate available in your area. No matter what company you choose to buy energy from, it will be utilizing the same network of poles, transformers and wires to light up your home. While deregulation is great for consumers, not every state is deregulated. Some states have deregulated options for natural gas or electricity and some provide both.
