When you move into a new home, there is a lot to consider. This can be one of the most stressful times in your like, but it's not worth stressing over... but it is worth putting a plan in place! Having a plan can be crucial in making your next move a success. While Hiring a reputable mover will take some of the edge off, but even with help from the professionals, there is still a lot to do!
Here are a few tips for putting together the most effective packing and moving plan for your family.
IT ALL STARTS WITH A PLAN
Writing out a list of rooms and items can help you define what areas need to be addressed first, and what rooms can be more easily managed. This is also a good time to color code your rooms - this is extremely helpful when packing rooms, and allows your boxes and furniture to easily be identified by your movers.
Head to the craft store and pick up a different color roll of duct tape for each room. Place a piece of tape on each box or piece of furniture. When you get to the new home, put a small piece on or over the door and the movers can get to work.
For breakables and valuables, write down any distinguishing information such as “fragile” on the label or box. This seems obvious, but it is important, your movers will take greater care of these boxes and keep your stuff from breaking.
This is the best time to take a few of those personal days you've been hanging on to. You may also want to make sure your pets are taken care of. If your kids had somewhere to be like a soccer game, they may need a ride. And if you have smaller kids, you may consider an off-site babysitter. Eliminate the possibility of stressful last-minute rushing; clear your schedule for an allotted amount of time to make things easier.
Even if you hire a mover, there are a lot of things you must complete in advance to prepare for your move. The most stress-free way to handle the planning, packing and sorting is to set aside time that you can solely dedicate to your relocation.
Keep - Sell - Donate - Toss
Four simple categories, but this is key when it comes to eliminating clutter.
If you are making donations (of substantial value) these can be tax deductible. Some organizations will even pick up your “junk” for you. This is an easy way to get rid of extra clothing, home goods, furniture and more.
Sort through your belongings room by room to determine what is worth taking with you. This is especially beneficial for people who have lived in the same home for many years.
If you plan accordingly, and the weather works with you, HAVE A YARD SALE!
Selling your old belongings is an easy way to eliminate extra clutter in just a few hours.
If you let go of most of your stuff, but still have a few larger items (pool table, Tool Box or old furniture), it's best to post these things on Facebook, Nextdoor, eBay or Craigslist. Post each item with "all offers considered" and see what you get. Worse comes to worse, update the post as a "curb alert" and place these leftover items out front.
Preparing in advance will help you avoid any frantic last-minute planning. Moving stress is only enhanced when you are unprepared and trying to complete everything in a hurry. Be prepared, don’t rush, stay organized, and take a “slow and steady” approach if you want to make your move an easy and stress-free experience.
