Moving is a stressful situation no matter what time of year it is. But when you are moving during the holiday season, this can be stress-overload. Packing your entire home into boxes, at the same time as doing your Christmas shopping could even cause you to spew a few "humbugs". Don't let it get you down, you can still have a successful move and a Happy Christmas and fun holiday season.
ALL BOXES CAN LOOK FESTIVE
Your house may be full of boxes, so why not get them in the Christmas spirit! You can wrap them like presents, use markers to let the kids draw Santa or a Christmas scene. You can even stock up on construction paper, tape, cotton balls for snow, wrapping paper and bows. After a box is taped up, let your kids have at it! This is also a great place to implement the "color coding" system we always recommend. Choose one color and designate that color to a room.
For example BLUE = KITCHEN. Then the kids can decorate boxes using this color for all boxes heading to the kitchen in your new home. When the moving truck arrives, let the movers know all blue boxes go to the kitchen. This makes it fun, and productive, making unloading these boxes quick and streamlined when you get to your new home!
KEEP IT SIMPLE
This may seem like an obvious thing to do, but we'd recommend not getting too elaborate when you have half your stuff sitting in boxes in the garage! You shouldn’t forgo decorating all together, but choose a select few items (we suggest the ones that are the easiest to pack) and leave the rest in their storage bins. As far as exterior lights go, the time needed to hang them could be put to better use packing up the garage and yard. A simple and quick way of decorating outdoors is to use inflatable Christmas yard balloons. They self-inflate in minutes and are super easy to take down.
When the holidays roll around and you start pulling out the decorations, you may have some annual family traditions. This can be a little jarring if you are in the middle of packing. The memories that were made in your current home will be more apparent when you realize this is the last Christmas there. Whatever you do, and no matter how urgent your move is, DO NOT FOREGO FAMILY TRADITIONS. You will never get this time back, and the relevance of decorating your tree on a specific day or eating Chinese food on Christmas Eve - your move will be there when you are done celebrating so enjoy it... then, get to work!
